I received this wonderful card from Martin who lives in Kiel, Germany. It is of the Gorch Fock, a boat with the German Navy. I particularly enjoyed the two stamps that he used to post the card. The left most is celebrating 600 years of the University of Leipzig…This is a translation from the German Deutsche Post website:

600 years University of Leipzig – Product ID: 004446
On December 2, 1409 heard the “alma mater Lipsiensis” (which is German for the “nourishing mother of Leipzig”) of one of the oldest universities in Europe. In Germany, it is the second oldest high school in Heidelberg where classes have been taught and research engaged, uninterrupted, to this day. For centuries, the University of Leipzig has held a leading position among German universities. During the communist era the research in some areas was restricted. Since German reunification, the University of Leipzig’s close links to great traditions and strives again to a prominent place in the ensemble of German and European universities. Currently, learning and researching has more than 25,000 students in Leipzig.

The second stamp shows the Lighthouse at Neuwerk.

Neuwerk Lighthouse – Product ID: 004476
The special stamps with the motives of the lighthouses ‘Neuwerk “and” Falshöft’ are part of the series “lighthouses” that want to draw attention to the diversity of German lighthouses.

The massive red lighthouse is the most important monument and landmark of the island Neuwerk. The 700-year-old tower is also the oldest by far of buoys and lighthouse construction in Germany. The tower is square with a side length of 13.5 m. The massive brick walls are 2.8 meters thick at the base and nearly 30 m high. The foundation reaches three meters underground and consists of rocks and boulders, and clumsy Schwellrost oak beams. Inside the tower there are eight floors on the stream approach. The bottom two floors each contain a three-nave brick-built brick vault. The other floors have wood beam ceilings. The tower was topped by a 7-meter-high pyramid-shaped roof. Since the early 1970s, there is no lighthouse keeper on Neuwerk. The beacon is monitored remotely from the Water and Shipping Authority Cuxhaven. Today the lighthouse Neuwerk has a halogen bulb which burns 600 watts of electric power. It has a scope of 15.4 nautical miles or 28.5 kilometers. The technicians of the water and shipping office exchange the lamps at intervals of about one to two months. The Neuwerk lighthouse stands listed since 1924.
