Free Utility for Bible Study

Ok, so everyone (well many people) have heard of e-sword.  Well, there is a version for Ubuntu/Linux called Xiphos.  It is really cool as it has a few Lutheran resources…in addition to the ESV Bible used in our church, users will find Luther’s Galations commentary, The Book of Concord, and The Proper Distinction Between Law and Gospel.  An excellent choice.

Look for it at http://www.xiphos.org/.  Oh, they support Windows, Fedora 8-10, Debian and Ubuntu, and SuSE.

Linux Part II

Ok, so I have Ubuntu on my laptop now.  I have noticed a number of problems, some bigger than others.  I have an AMD Turion 64 chip.  This means that there are a lot of utilities not available in the default channels (such as Flash and my wireless chip driver).  Both required alpha releases to get it working.  Not a big deal for me, but difficult for someone who isn’t computer savy.

One thing that I did notice is how many sites require Flash!  Unfotunately, many of them dont work with Gnash.  Oh well!  And the ones that do have wierd problems such as text over text.

Ubuntu

Ok, after listening to Pastor Bloghart I got around to installing Ubuntu.  I had previously used Linux without much success many years ago (8 or so).  I always had some hardware that didn’t have drivers.  It was always some very important (like the Internet, or modem, or CD drivers).  Well, the last version of Linux I used was Red Hat (to give you a little idea).
Well, I used a Ubuntu installer in Windows, which puts Ubuntu into the Windows Filesystem.  (I have to use certain software for education that is in Windows only).  Not to mention, the college network doesn’t work good with all things not WinXP.  Anyway, it took less than 5 minutes to put a mini install on my Laptop.  (30GB is the largest filesystem supported).  I had to plug in since I have an oddball wireless so I could download the driver (it is from a development package and not the default install).  Otherwise, everything seems to work.  I haven’t tried hooking up my printers (another problem with Linux in the past – I had a printer that only worked in Windows.
I’d highly recommend trying Ubuntu.  I installed Texmaker which works wonderfully!.  I am really liking it.  Anyway, we shall see how this example is.  Once I get my PC back from my brother, I am going to install Ubuntu on the old Dell.  (Yeah, I’ll have Vista, Windows Server, Ubuntu, and XP installed on PC’s here.  Pretty awesome, if you ask me!)  Later!
