Volo Bog State Natural Area offers 869-acres of natural areas containing bogs, marshes, woodlands, and prairies. Offering habitat for 18 endangered and threatened plants, the park is a National Natural Landmark. The bog is 47.5 acres and originally was formed by a deep lake.

Visitor Center Hours: The visitor center is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and has trail guides and maps. The preserve is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Memorial Day to Labor day, 8.a.m. to 4 p.m. the remaining portions of the year.

Directions for parking:
From McHenry, take Lincoln Road northeast across the Lake County line to Brandenberg road. Turn north to the park entrance. Or from the east, take Route 12 north from Volo and turn left onto Brandenberg Road for 1.2 miles.
Notes:
Tamarack View Trail (2.8 mile) features steep hills and offers views of oak woods, open fields, prairie, and marshlands.
