Rider's Comments: There are 2.5 miles of packed earth hiking trails at this 850-acre Illinois Nature Preserve, weaving among woodlands, wetlands and prairie.
A .5-mile trail that loops around a prairie field connects with the hiking-only 1.3-mile Woodland Trail through the flood plain of Thorn Creek. Here the trail runs along a bluff high above a large ravine. Near the parking lot, a nature center occupies an old church, where you'll find displays, books and a bird-feeding station.
